Watch telly on a one-inch screen with this teeny RP2040-powered TV

Purveyors of miniature goods TinyCircuits are about to bless our desks with new creations: TinyTV 2 and TinyTV Mini. They’re now in production after successfully completing crowdfunding at the end of last year and the team estimate their backers will receive their TV sets in April 2023.

Powered by Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi RP2040 provides the processing power for both TinyTV 2 (which measures 1.9″ × 1.4″ × 1.0″) and TinyTV Mini (even smaller at 1.0″ × 0.94″ × 0.86″). Alongside our microcontroller chip, the design team figured out how to squeeze in batteries, video storage capacity, buttons, speakers, and a display screen. It’s fine engineering artistry on a tiny scale.

Channel hopping

Choose what to watch by loading your own videos onto your TinyTV set via USB-C. Or just switch on and start watching by selecting one of the preloaded videos. You can also stream video from a different machine connected via USB-C.

Second gen upgrades

These second generation upgrades from the original TinyTV sets boast higher resolution screens and working channel changing and volume knobs. You can also control them with a tiny remote control, but we doubt that’s going to be an option for us since we lose regular-sized remotes often enough.

The TinyTV Mini (below) does almost everything TinyTV 2 (above) does, just in an extra-small space. It’s about half the size of TinyTV 2 but is only truly watchable by ants, so if you’re dripping in nostalgic hobbies and have an ant farm on your desk, go for it. Not sure what ants would like to watch though. Perhaps timelapse of dams being built. Or The World’s Strongest Man competitions.

The world’s tiniest Game Boy?

You might remember TinyCircuits as the brains behind certainly the smallest Game Boy that I’ve ever seen. You can now buy it in actual real life for just under $30. It comes in grey, pink, or teal, but we are deeply in love with the clear version because it reminds us of Terminator when his skin starts to melt off. Plus it goes with every outfit, which is how I always decide which tech to buy.
