Medical equipment manufacturer Bio Business scaled up with Raspberry Pi

Egyptian medical equipment manufacturer Bio Business was looking to upgrade patient monitoring devices with IoT capability. The story of how Bio Business and Raspberry Pi came to work together is the latest addition to our collection of Success Stories, but here’s a quick overview.

Detailed data like temperature, humidity, and air quality readings were needed, as well as a cloud connection to store and share all the data. You don’t want to be sending humans to physically wander through a hospital disturbing patients to check on the functioning of medical equipment if you can avoid it; a remote monitoring solution is less intrusive and less resource-intensive as well.

How is Raspberry Pi involved?

Bio Business chose Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 and RP2040 microcontrollers to incorporate into their medical products.

Our tiny computers and microcontrollers do all sorts of cool things. One application sees them powering portable device monitors which allow CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines to check oxygen levels, and display information on LCD screens for the patient. We’re also inside an oxygen concentrator that lets the user adjust their own flow while making efficient use of the oxygen in ambient air.

Scaling fast

The Egyptian government encouraged Bio Business to expand during the COVID-19 pandemic to help the country meet its medical care needs.

An initial order of 14,000 RP2040s represented a significant outlay for the 49-employee company, but with reliable technical support from us here at Raspberry Pi, they have been able to meet the time-sensitive requirements of their customers.

Currently, Bio Business is the only company in Egypt doing this kind of research and development and getting better products to market, something company founder Mostafa Elwakeel says is “good for us, but not good for the country.”

Bio Business might be the newest kid on our business applications story block, but they’re a very long way from the only ones using our tiny computers for big things. We also help to produce fabulous wine at Vineyard Kikushima in Japan, enable Directed Machines‘ robots to carry out agricultural tasks, and keep the wheels turning at Brompton‘s iconic London bicycle manufacturing facility.
